HOW TO PURGE, ORGANIZE AND STORE YOUR MAKEUP

Makeup is fun to buy so women tend to have a lot of it. But often, the amount of it gets out of control. Makeup is easy to purge because colors go out of favor, and it gets old.

First, lay out all your makeup and put into piles by type. Include a pile of your favorite makeup that you use most often. Then start purging. This is what to toss, how to organize, and how to store.

WHAT TO TOSS

-- Eye shadow that has even the slightest crack in it.

-- Pencils that have dried out.

-- Lipsticks and glosses that smell funny and/or are gummy.

-- Mascara that is crumbly or flaky, or older than 6 months.

-- Creams in jars and anything applied to the face with your fingers, which introduces bacteria to the product.

-- Items that you haven't used in a year.

HOW TO ORGANIZE

Create bins or drawers and label by type. A cup is good for brushes (which you should wash in soap and water periodically).

HOW TO STORE

Heat is where bacteria breeds. Cold is good such as a cool dark closet. Some women keep their creams in the refrigerator but that would seem inconvenient. Nail polish, however, does have a longer shelf life if kept in the refrigerator.
