What if opportunity knocks…

…and you can’t find the door?

It has been proven that when you get your life organized, you create space for something new to enter it -- a new job or project, a new business contact or friend, a new idea.

Unfortunately, many people have so much clutter in their lives that they miss many opportunities  because there is no path to the door for all the clutter.

Mail & Paper Files
(Home or Office)

Many clients have issues with piles of mail and paper, causing lots of stress. Most mail is junk and can be quickly sorted out and recycled. A lot of the paper is extraneous and can also be recycled. What’s left is a tidy, much less intimidating pile. Some clients are satisfied with that. Others ask me to continue on and sort the mail and papers by category. I will then leave the organized mail for the client to address. As for papers, I can make folders by date and category and update the current file system, or create a new system altogether. I’m good with paper!

Kitchens & Pantries

I luv luv working in kitchens and pantries. My own studio apartment-sized kitchen is very user friendly and purr-fectly set up so that everything is handy. It has taken a long time to get it to where I like it. When preparing meals, nothing is worse than having to dig around to find a gadget or just the right size container or pot. Purging is a good starting point, followed by consolidation of likes with likes. Cook Asian a lot? I will containerize all the spices and sauces and grains. Have a tea fetish? I will create a tea station so that everything you need is in one place.  Turn your kitchen over to The Clutter Whisperer. I will make it magical!

Wall Units & Bookcases

Wall units and bookcases should reflect who you are but tend to attract knick-knacks and look cluttered. To better showcase you and your family, I can arrange your books and décor for both easier accessibility and aesthetics. Organize the books by subject matter? Done. Arrange them by color? Done. As you like…

Beautiful shot of clothes closet. Medium grey background. Wood trim. Women’s blouses hanging from rod on right side; women’s jackets hanging from rod on left side. 3 different sized purses on shelving in between jackets and blouses. Image is beautifully staged.

Closets

There are several types of closets. Some remain as intentioned. Mostly, they become places to stash. If one closet is packed, chances are the others are, too. The way to tackle this is to pull everything out and deal – purge, consolidate, containerize, use one kind of hanger throughout, work creatively with shoes, try to keep the floors clear. And perhaps prescribe some inexpensive shelving. I get requests for closet organizing ALL the time. I have seen every conceivable situation. I am a pro at this!

Very modern bathroom. Grey walls and floors. Standalone white tub. Walk in shower with frosted glass door. Long light wood cabinet with storage, double round black sinks. Round mirror on wall above each sink..

Bathrooms

People who have clutter issues in their bathrooms (on sink tops, around bathtubs, on shower floors and more) most often have too much product. They like trying lots of new items but never use up the old. Besides the tried and true purging, I have other ideas for how to manage all the product so that it’s not so visible. Love dealing with toiletries!

Wide view of an aisle in a very modern, clean storage facility. Floors are grey cement. Walls are grey. Doors to storage units are bright orange. Ceiling is black. Aisle is well lit.

Storage Units

I normally do not recommend storage units, unless they are for seasonal items such as camping or sports equipment. The rent is expensive and with off-site units, prices seem to mysteriously increase every 3 months! But if you have one, my goal is to pare down the contents so that you can downsize the unit and save some money.

Offices
(On & Off-Site)

Some people can work surrounded by chaos. But most cannot. I tell clients this all the time:  I can almost promise you that once we clear the clutter and set up organizing systems, your stress will diminish and your brain will free up to make a new friend, bring in a new client, generate a new idea for your employer. Try it!

Craft & Toy Areas

My face lights up when I see out-of-control craft and toy areas! It’s so much fun to organize! It’s best to get this under control when the kids are very young. The world gets more and more complex. It is difficult to maneuver without basic organizing skills, IMO. Creating systems will teach them to appreciate order and is an opportunity for them to learn new skills. I will show you how to manage their art projects, deal with those pesky Legos, and create a quiet place for them to create.

Container of black and white photos. Scattered. Not in any particular order.

Photos & Memorabilia

I always highly recommend clients create a memorabilia box for the family, or for the adults v. the children. You will thank me! 😊You can’t imagine how many things you have that qualify to go into that box – photos, certificates, medals, letters/cards, mementos, old passports, graduation gown/cap, art.  Going forward, now you have a dedicated place for your keepsakes. And going down memory lane will be a rewarding experience.

Corporate Storage & Merch Rooms

My corporate experience is primarily with storage and merch rooms. They tend to become messy quickly because multiple employees go into these rooms. The same strategy applies here as it does to home closets – purge, order items by type and frequency of use, make all items very accessible, and label where necessary. Your business will run a lot more smoothly as a result, and your employees will thank you.

Very large, high ceiling-ed foyer. Sophisticated. Bright and white. 2 straw wreaths on one wall. Patterned floor in grey and black. Umbrella stand near door. Front door is tall and all windows.

Foyers
& Mud Rooms

I find many entryways in NYC apartments to be somewhat chaotic, especially if there are children in the household. Shoes, boots, hoodies, coats, backpacks, sports equipment, packages coming and going. My strategy is to first purge, and if it’s summer, to put away all winter shoes/boots and jackets/coats. Dress shoes can also be put away. A large basket can be used to store small children’s shoes, as well as sports equipment. I have other ideas as well!

Wooden desk with white top mounted on 2 sawhorses. Modern looking. Large black trash can on floor. Small computer screen on desktop. Lots of loose hanging cables visible underneath the desk.

Electronic Cables & Wiring

I will bet you that I can find at least two cables that don’t belong in your mix. Probably more. Through purging, detangling, securing and labeling, I can tame the tangle of electronic cables and wiring and present them neatly and functionally. Once it’s done, you will be good for the next several years!

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING AN

Organizing session with
The Clutter Whisperer

STEP 1

Neat Storage Boxes

Decluttering and Eliminating Unnecessary Possessions

During an organizing session, the first step is to help you declutter and eliminate possessions you no longer need or want. For instance, if you're undecided about donating a bulky bread maker, I might suggest donating it in exchange for a 1-1/2 hour no-knead bread recipe that takes no space.

STEP 4

White office organization

Tips on Purchasing Organizational Items

I offer tips on where to buy certain organizational items, plus selected furniture and rugs, along with estimated costs.

STEP 2

Neatly Folded Linen

Introducing Systems for Consolidation and Storage

Next, I introduce ways and systems to consolidate, store, display, and repurpose what you decide to keep. Consideration is given to your work and living styles, needs, and whether you are left or right-handed. For example, instead of discarding an unattractive TV table, I might suggest painting it in a high gloss color and repurposing it.

STEP 5

Email Follow Up

Follow-Up Email

After the session, I send a follow-up email summarizing the suggested repairs and purchases to make, as well as small mop-up projects to complete. Clients often tell me that the follow-up email is as valuable as the actual organizing session.

STEP 3

Cozy clean Bedroom

Practical Solutions for Creating Space

I share my Top 10 most practical solutions for creating space or the illusion of space. (Ask me how I could create an extra closet for you!)
