CLUTTER-FREE HOLIDAY GIFTING IDEAS

Writer's picture: The Clutter Whisperer of NYCThe Clutter Whisperer of NYC

'Tis the gift-giving season!

If you are tired of giving/receiving the same ole, same ole (slippers, ties, mittens, perfumey lotions, candles...), or are concerned about the environment, or are worried about adding more clutter to your home or your giftees' homes, and/or just want to do something different and creative...below are some ideas to guide you.

Rather than re-invent the wheel, I thought I would provide links to existing lists of non-clutter gifts by age group, family member, sex etc. and by type of gift as follows:

  • Men, women

  • Expectant parents

  • Grandparents

  • Infants/toddlers

  • Young children

  • Teenagers

  • College-age adults

  • Teachers

  • Stocking stuffers

  • Inexpensive/homemade

To the above lists, I want to add "Millennials". They are allegedly especially attracted to having experiences and renting over owning "stuff" that weighs them down. These gift ideas are especially tailored to them.

  • Tickets to sporting events, shows or movies

  • Gym class, massage, Art of Shaving or spa certificates

  • Gift cards to places like Starbucks, Target, iTunes, and Amazon

  • Gift cards to Uber, Lyft or Zipcar

  • A series of prepaid car washes

  • Pre-paid art or cooking classes

  • Monthly delivery of artisanal food products

  • Museum membership

  • Dinner at a special local restaurant

  • Rent the Runway gift card

  • Money towards a flight or hotel

  • Magazine subscriptions

  • A session with a professional organizer :-)

Also, I wrote a blog on my website on July 28, 2018 on "ARE GRANDPARENTS CONTRIBUTING TO YOUR TOY EXPLOSION?"

There are tips in the blog on how to guide well-meaning friends and relatives to help you keep excessive toys out of your house/apartment. Link to blog: https://www.wix.com/dashboard/e4edbc92-08a8-4153-a545-8bdefa2edabe/app/61f33d50-3002-4882-ae86-d319c1a249ab?referralInfo=sidebar

Something to keep in mind: When the gifts come in, it's always a good idea to take out/donate the same number of items. Make the time to do this. Otherwise, it will accumulate and you will begin to feel overwhelmed.
